Low Sex Drive
It is important to remember that a person’s sex drive will likely fluctuate over the course of their life.
Beyond this, however, some will find that their sex drive represents problems in their relationships, enough so that they seek the assistance of medical professionals.
Lack of sex drive or lack of libido is common in women, but less common in men. Despite its prevalence, low sex drive is often not addressed by healthcare providers or patients due to their private and awkward nature.
Additionally, sexual desire disorders are under-recognized and often under-treated disorders leading to a great deal of morbidity in relationships. Situations such as the end of a marriage, the emergence of illness, major life changes, age, depression, certain medications, alcohol and drug use, chronic stress, and physiological changes can all adversely impact one’s libido.
Persistent and recurrent lack of sexual interest
If a patient suffers from persistent and recurrent lack of sexual interest, low sex drive (hypoactive sexual desire disorder or sexual aversion disorder) may be the cause.
It is imperative to remember that the aforementioned definition does not apply to all individuals. There is no single definition of what would be considered a low sex drive. Everyone is different. Everyone has different needs and desires.
It may be normal for one person to desire sex only a few times a week, while others would find that number extremely anomalous. It is imperative to remember that sexual problems will only require treatment if it has become a problem for the person or their partner. If it is an acute issue or an issue that is of no concern to the person or their partner, no action may be the best action.
If there is cause for doubt, patients should not hesitate to speak to qualified professionals to discuss their concerns.
Treatment options
Several treatment options are available to those who suffer from a low sex drive. The treatment will depend heavily on the cause. In many circumstances, treatment of low sex drive can be accomplished by treating the underlying cause of the low sex drive.
Psychosexual therapy, creams, hormone replacement, exercises, medications (including erectile medications), and various sexual devices (i.e. vibrators and dildos) are examples of the currently available treatments. Generally speaking, in order to feel like having sex, one must have a certain level of health and sense of well-being.
Rarely does one problem have a single solution that will not benefit from other treatments or actions. Patients need to find methods that work best for them and their partners. Speaking to a qualified healthcare professional and assiduous education may help patients reach their sexual goals.
