Pain Conditions

There are a variety of pain conditions resulting from problems such as back injuries, headaches, joint pain, fibromyalgia, nerve damage, and others.  About 10% of the population is affected by a form of chronic pain.  Some common causes for chronic pain are listed below:

1) Back pain resulting from:

– Slipped or bulging discs from twisting or lifting injuries

Spinal stenosis or narrowing of the spinal canal

– Compression fractures associated with osteoporosis

– Soft tissue damage from heavy lifting or trauma

– Fractures from falls, car accidents, or crush injuries

– Structural deformities like scoliosis, kyphosis, or lordosis

2) Headaches  resulting from:

– Muscle tension from stress, fatigue, improper sleeping positions

– Eye strain from extended computer use or wearing the wrong eyeglass prescription

Migraines

Cluster headaches

– Other chronic diseases, like multiple sclerosis, cancer, brain injuries, HIV, and high blood pressure

3) Joint pain resulting from:

Osteoarthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis

Repetitive strain injuries from sports, or similar activities

4) Neuropathic pain resulting from:

– Sciatica causing compression of the sciatic nerve from the back to the feet

– Bulging or slipped discs causing nerve compression in the spinal cord

Diabetic neuropathy

Carpal tunnel syndrome

Multiple sclerosis

– Spinal cord injury

Stroke

5) Other chronic pain causes:

Fibromyalgia

– Cancer

– Depression

Besides causing persistent discomfort and psychological distress, untreated chronic pain can also have adverse effects on the function of the immune system.  Neurological feedback processes may strengthen untreated pain and complicate diagnosis and further treatment.
